In the wake of her passing, memorabilia to her quickly rose to prominence. Diana's early death in 1997 devastated not only the British royal family but also fans across the globe. However, both brothers have taken drastically different paths in their life while William has stuck to his duty, Harry took the unconventional path and left behind his role as a senior royal, opting instead for a life in the United States with his wife Meghan Markle. Both brothers have taken carried on Princess Diana's legacy in terms of being outspoken about mental health. ![]() William and Harry have worked hard to preserve their mother's legacy both symbolically but also throughout their own charity work as parts of the royal family. The brothers commissioned the statue of their beloved mom back in 2017 for the 20th anniversary of her death. Unfortunately, however, Meghan Markle won't be joining him on the trip, as she is staying in the United States following the birth of the couple's daughter Lilibet Diana - who is named after both her great-grandmother and grandmother - earlier this month. Prince William and Prince Harry will unveil the statue of their late mother together, with Harry traveling to the U.K. The date - which coincides with what would have been her 60th birthday - has been pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic, but finally, the day for the statue's unveiling is nearly upon us. The flower beds are nice though.Set to be unveiled on July 1 is the first official statue in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales. Instead, this somehow nauseating statue will stand with all the bronze footballers as baffling evidence to future generations that in the early 21st century, people wasted their money, effort and debates on silly, sterile, insignificant works of art. That truly might be the artistic equivalent of Elton John singing Candle in the Wind. If only it were possible to email Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 17th-century Rome and get him to make something as warm and seemingly alive as his bust of his lover Costanza Bonarelli. We demand statues of the good – and Diana was good – but sadly art has spent the last century or so forgetting how to create them. It is as if all our public debates fixated on scrimshaw, the madrigal or some other lost art. We have become obsessed with this archaic art form. Then again, it’s not as if any other statues being raised today are much better. Flat, cautious realism softened by a vague attempt to be intimate make this a spiritless and characterless hunk of nonsense. Are we sure Charles had no hand here? It looks like his insipid artistic taste. In style it breathes the kind of repression and formality which Harry has claimed to reject. Perhaps not even for Diana’s sincerest believers, for the statue group’s emotive symbolism is undermined by its aesthetic awfulness.
